Behind the Scenes: Cloister Hood

The Prairie Spinner Posted on August 17, 2020 by spinnerNovember 29, 2024

It’s a wonderful thing, to see in print a project that started out as an idea in your own head, brought into existence by your own hands! Dyeing Styles and Spinning Techniques

The Prairie Spinner Posted on November 29, 2017 by spinnerNovember 29, 2024

Before we get into a few other ways to spin hand-dyed braids, let’s pause and look at three basic types of ‘dye jobs’, in no particular order. In the last post, I talked about spinning hand-dyed braids in fractals, using a short section of roving I dyed in (basically) three colors.  The resulting knitted swatches demonstrated the tweedy color-shifting variations, and we looked at trying to predict how the yarns would turn out before starting to spin. Be aware that spinning fractals is somewhat predictable only for… Continue Reading More Flippin’ Fractals

Flippin’ Fractals

The Prairie Spinner Posted on August 2, 2017 by spinnerNovember 29, 2024

One popular method for spinning hand-dyed braids is the fractal technique.  A simple definition of ‘fractal’ is when “similar patterns recur at progressively smaller scales”.  In fractal art, “the same pattern repeats over and over”. Translated into spin-speak, this means splitting a hand-dyed braid into multiple sections and spinning them end-to-end, then plying the results.  Start by stripping the braid… Continue Reading Flippin’ Fractals
